“Stop talking, Chuck. I don’t want to know.” Elise covered her ears. Unconsciously, tears started welling up in her eyes again.
”What are you hoping for?” Chuck enquired.
”As a daughter, I hope you like her! I plead you to like her, because she has been under a lot of pressure lately as the burden of the family is heavy on her. I’ve always wanted to find a man for her, to help her, but she has always refused my attempts.” Memories of the past began to resurface in Elise’s mind. In fact, she had grown extremely exhausted over the past few years. For a long time, Elise had been trying to introduce different men to Sophia! However, Sophia hadn’t taken any interest in any of them. Therefore, after a long period of time, Elise finally gave up.
Chuck smiled faintly.
”But, as a woman, I don’t want you to be with her, because I also like you,” Elise admitted, tears trickling from her eyes.
Chuck sighed at that. ”Why do you like me? Haven’t you always looked down on me?”
”Yes, it was like that at the beginning. I hated you very much, but after you saved me in the Amazon forest, I began to like you.” Elise confessed the truth.
Once again, Chuck heaved a sigh. Chuck neither hated nor liked Elise. Even if there was any feeling, it was also because of Sophia. Nonetheless, whatever he felt for her was not romantic love. ”I think you have mistaken your feelings of gratitude towards me as romantic feelings.”
”No, definitely not. I know it very well. I like you! I really like you!” Elise anxiously corrected him.
Chuck was silent for a while. Finally, he told her, “Please forget about this feeling.”
Elise started crying silently and said, “Don’t be so cruel to me. Please don’t be like this. I’ve never liked a person and you’re the first one.”
”For Sophia’s sake, I can also like you,” Chuck said.
”No! I don’t want that! I hate that kind of love!” Elise broke down in tears. She was young and beautiful and her figure was one to die for. She had had many admirers since her days in school. However, she didn’t like a single one of them! She thought that she would marry a handsome man! However, things didn’t turn out that way. Elise didn’t expect that she would fall in love with Chuck, whom she had hated the most previously.
Chuck remained silent.
Elise continued crying for a long time until the sun set. Even at nightfall she was still crying! Her eyes turned red and swollen. However, Chuck did not say a single word to comfort her. She was twitching. In the end, she ran out of tears. Perhaps it was because she was tired of crying, or maybe she had suddenly figured it out. Her beautiful eyes looked at the moon in the distance as she suddenly fell silent.
”Are you done crying? I’ll send you home,” Chuck said.
”Well, that’s not necessary. I’ll go home by myself.” Elise rejected his offer. She got up and got in her car.
However, Chuck caught up with her. ”I’ll take you home.”
”Who are you to send me back?” Elise asked.
Chuck was stupefied. He had a wife and it was Yvette! So, who was he to her? Even he himself didn’t understand. ”Whoever you think I am, it doesn’t matter.” With that, Chuck lugged Elise into his car.
Chuck had promised Sophia that he would bring Elise back safe and sound. Finally, they arrived home. Elise calmly said, ”Well, I’m home now. You can go back.”
”I still have something to say to Sophia. Are you going to drive me away?” Chuck asked.
Without a response, Elise got out of the car and went in alone.
Chuck was silent for a moment. The situation he was in was unspeakably awkward. He felt like a fool! Chuck entered Sophia’s house. In the house, Sophia was hugging Elise! Sophia was overwhelmed with emotions and she could no longer hold back her tears. She had waited for a whole afternoon and it had been a nightmare!
”Mom, I’m sorry. I won’t be self-centered anymore.” Elise apologized. Elise had thought it through. Sophia had tried her best to raise Elise up. Elise should know how to behave!
”Elise, I’m sorry, I…”
”Don’t say that. You’re worried about hurting me. I know.”
Chuck nodded. Chuck told Sophia that he had already convinced Elise. Sophia felt grateful.
”Mom, you two talk. I’m going in.” With that, Elise entered her room.
”Don’t go, I won’t see him again.” Sophia knew that Elise was sad. It was true Sophia had affection for Chuck! However, she knew that there would be no outcome from their relationship! Since that was the case… It’s best to keep it to herself forever! It would be the best to have Elise instead of Chuck. She should just treat her affection for Chuck as an unattainable fantasy.
”No, you should see him. I’m going in.” Elise returned to her room.
Sophia was at a loss. What had happened to her daughter during the afternoon? She thought that Elise would make a fuss and find a place to hide. However, it didn’t occur! Did it mean that she had grown up?
Sophia was moved and distressed at the same time. How capricious was Elise beforehand? After all, Elise had knocked Chuck out and brought him to Amazon! Yet, Elise was currently so rational that Sophia couldn’t even believe her eyes!
”Sophia, I…”
”Chuck, you and I should stop here. You have given me something to keep in my memory and that’s enough. Can we end it here?” Sophia said.
